What exactly is private labeling?
You are able to partner with a lab and you use their formula as your own. They’ve developed the product and you put your label on their product. Easy.
This route is faster and budget-friendly due to the formula having already been tested and approved. With a lab’s formula, you’re pretty much entering into a long-term relationship. That’s why finding and choosing the right lab is important.

Contract manufacturing is typically the step after custom formulating and testing is completed. When you custom formulate at Genie Supply, you walk away with the formula. When you contract manufacture, you have to walk up to us with the formula, so that we can make it. (So if you’ve landed on this page, but your formulation isn’t finished yet, head back to the custom formulating page to learn more about your first steps!)
Contract manufacturing can also be for those who have been creating their beauty products at home, and are looking to scale with/into a lab. A recipe you’ve made in your kitchen won’t match up with a lab formula due to factors like different ways of measuring, but there are ways we can work together to get your formulation lab-ready.
This type of service occurs when a co-manufacturer is hired to manufacture the products of a brand or small business. If you’re trying to manufacture food products with your own food recipes or formulations, then maybe co-manufacturing is the type of service you need.
Co-manufacturing allows you to have more control and ownership potential over your food products. It’s important to note that some co-manufacturers can also be co-packers, so more often than not, you will see that the two terms are used interchangeably.

If a Contract Manufacturer offers turnkey services this means that they handle everything, from packaging and labeling / screen-printing, batching, testing, and assembly.

Cottage food laws typically restrict sales to foods that are considered nonhazardous or at low risk for foodborne illness. These include baked goods such as breads, biscuits and cookies, jams and jellies, and homemade pickles. Most other foods are prohibited, including meats, poultry and home-canned nonacidic vegetables or meats. So, if you planned to sell your "world-famous" chili or venison jerky, you're out of luck.
A good rule of thumb is that if a food requires refrigeration, freezing or precise handling to remain safe, it's probably not allowed. Check your state department of health's website for further details.

Ideal For:
Cosmetics
Fragrances
Essential Oils
You can create your own products at home; however, if you do not use preservatives in your homemade products, you should treat your products like you would fresh fruits and understand your shelf life will be limited. The U.S. FDA provides information to help you understand best practices for product creation.
Equipment:
Investing in the right mixing equipment can homogenize and blend your products more optimally. It improves your manufacturing quality, which helps you gain a good reputation for your product. Food processors and kitchen blenders are meant for milling vegetables and food and are not designed for processing products and raw materials.

Co-packing: It’s a type of packaging service that’s provided by co-packers. Unlike private labeling, which normally involves the production of products, co-packing specifically refers to processes such as bottling, canning, boxing, and other kinds of packaging services. Although co-packers mainly provide packaging services, they can also offer other related services such as package testing and safety, package designing, and shipping services.
